Brief Historical Note

During the time frame of the Strategic Defense Initiative (Star Wars) discussions, Tom Boster made the acquaintance of Arthur Schawlow, Ph.D. Dr. Schawlow invented the ruby laser in 1960. He became Chairman of the Physics Department at Stanford University in 1966 and later (1981) received the Nobel Prize in Physics for his "contribution to the development of laser spectroscopy." A paper written by Dr. Boster, which required peer review at the highest level, was sponsored by Dr. Schawlow. (See abstract below.) The paper successfully repudiated the claim of an alleged X-ray laser system. Applied Optics is the Optical Society of America’s most widely read journal.
