Helmet Camera Developed

Since 1992 we have been utilizing techniques and specialized equipment to make day and night time film and video that accurately portray the motorist's view, from within the vehicle, of accident scenes.  Since that time, the subjects of our visibility assignments have included passenger cars, trucks of all sizes, bicycles and motorcycles, an all-terrain vehicle, and even the engineer's seated position within a locomotive operated at night.  On assignments involving bicycles or motorcycles, video has been a challenge because compact video cameras are bulky and not easily used when attached to appropriate headgear.  However, recent advances in digital video technology have finally made it possible to easily depict the view of bicyclists and motorcyclists in motion using helmet-mounted video camera components.

The photographs accompanying this article show the attachment of our high resolution Sony digital camera to a motorcycle helmet at the eye level of the rider.  Not shown are the digital video recorder, microphone and power supply, which are carried in a special vest worn by the rider during filming.  The recorder includes a monitor that allows for playback and review of video coverage at the scene.  This helmet/camera combination lends itself nicely to unrestricted movement at speed, with the camera capturing the perspective of the rider with every dip and turn of the road.  A similar mounting configuration is being developed for a bicycle helmet.
