Ph.D. degree in Physics

Tom Boster was invited by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and the head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy to deliver the graduate school colloquium at Ohio University on 18 May 2001. Tom was given the topic of "Physics is What Physicists Do" in keeping with his career as an electrical engineer, university professor, research physicist and consulting forensic engineer/scientist.

During his presentation, Tom reviewed several of his articles published in a wide variety of international academic journals, but found that the major interest of the audience was in his high profile cases ("Lady Di," Karen Silkwood, Cesar Chavez, "Willie" Shoemaker) and his association with a wide range of personalities such as the motorcycle daredevil Robert Craig ("Evel") Knievel and the eminent nuclear physicist, Dr. Edward Teller.

There were other activities at Ohio University planned for Tom during his three day visit.  He presented a lecture to the faculty and students in the Forensic Chemistry Department and conducted informal meetings with the astronomy, acoustics and solid state physics section of the Physics Department.

Tom also had time to have his routine visit with long-time mentor and friend, Dr. John E. Edwards, Distinguished Professor of Physics, Emeritus in Athens, Ohio.  Dr. Edwards, former head of the Physics Department at Ohio University and 93 years young, attended Tom's colloquium and, to everyone's delight, propounded a number of good questions and made several kind remarks on Tom's teaching ability and research integrity.
