The Library

What began in 1979 with assorted file boxes and binders loaded with journal and newspaper articles has grown into a bona fide library that is constantly growing.  The Boster, Kobayashi Library now houses nearly 2,000 volumes in the areas of science, engineering, accident reconstruction, human factors, injury causation, biomechanics, and safety.  Our product safety literature series is complete from 1973.  Organized and developed to support the wide variety of research requests and routine data needs of our engineers and scientists, the collection also includes over 1,000 standards (ASTM, ANAI, UL), 600 videos (animations, crash tests, and made-for-television) and 1,500 Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) documents.

In addition to these resources, the holdings include some 160,000 pages of articles/reprints organized into 120 major subjects, ranging from accelerometers to x-rays, most of which have multiple subheadings.  For example, under Sports, you will find "boating," "camping," "swimming," "golf," etc.  The Roads area is organized by issuing agency (Caltrans, AASHTO, ASCE, ITE, TRB, etc.) and then cross-referenced by subject.

In the area of code compliance, we have building, life safety, fire, mechanical, plumbing and electrical codes, as well as OSHA and Title 8.  The UBC collection is complete from 1927, and our San Francisco Building Codes start in 1903.  In the automotive area, our frame diagrams date from 1960 and our collision estimating guides from 1979.

Access to the SAE archives, as well as databases on automotive design liability, sky (sun/moon) positions, crash tests, and vehicle specifications, is available. Thirty-eight journals are regularly received, and our holdings of several titles run back to the late seventies/early eighties.  Additionally we make full use of the Internet, document delivery services, and interlibrary loan.
