Staff Profile - Gary Hesler

Gary Hesler joined the Boster firm in 1988. He brought with him experience in performing forensic examinations in the areas of construction and walkway safety, highway design, traffic safety, traffic accident reconstruction, building code compliance, and storm water related incidents.

Gary received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Pennsylvania State University in 1976. His first twelve years of practice included flood studies, property survey, land development design, and municipal engineering. Mr. Hesler became a Registered Professional Engineer in 1980. During this period he was appointed Township or Borough Engineer for seven Pennsylvania Municipalities. Local government assignments included developing and updating standards for roadways and walkways, sanitary and storm drainage improvements and bridge design, and advising municipalities on roadway maintenance and traffic safety.

Working in the municipal engineering area brought Gary in regular and frequent contact with attorneys who on occasion would retain him in legal disputes. "My decision to join a forensic engineering firm in the Philadelphia suburbs in 1987 was one I have never regretted. In the nineteen years that followed there has never been a boring day at the office. This has been an incredible journey."

Prior to attending Pennsylvania State University, Mr. Hesler served as a Military Intelligence Specialist in the U.S. Army. His work included interpreting film from reconnaissance aircraft and satellite systems. The imagery included conventional photography, infrared and radar for target detection, topographic studies, and highway analysis. He served in the Republic of Vietnam in 1969 and 1970.

Photography has remained one of Gary’s special interest areas, particularly night photography. He has participated in several UC Berkeley photography workshops, two UC Berkeley Night Photography classes, and photography courses sponsored by Nikon and Kodak. He has also taken an evidence photography training course offered by the Evidence Photographers International Council, of which he is a member. Gary is recognized as one of the finest photography experts in California.

Gary’s assignments take him all over the USA, particularly in the areas of railroad grade crossings and bicycle component design safety. Additional current areas of investigation and expert witness testimony include:

-Vehicular and pedestrian accident reconstruction
-Railroad accident reconstruction involving vehicles, pedestrians and workmen
-Human factors
-Construction and workplace safety
-Premises liability, including walkway and stairway safety and lighting

Gary is very well received in the legal community, and is often requested for cases based on word-of-mouth referrals. He is available on short notice for aerial photography & video of accident scenes. He is requested to provide this support routinely on railroad cases. A helicopter owner/pilot at the nearby Livermore Airport provides logistical support.
