SAE Paper on Impacts Published

The paper on rear-end impacts that was profiled in the last issue of the Reconstructor is now a bona fide Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) publication. The paper, entitled "Rear-End Impact Testing with Human Test Subjects" was reviewed by the SAE technical publications board and designated paper #2001-01-0168. The authors are Tom Braun, Janet Jhoun, Mike Braun, Brad Wong, Tom Boster, Ted Kobayashi, Frank Perez and Gary Hesler.

The paper was published in an SAE Special Publication (SP), Side Impact, Rear Impact, and Rollover (SP-1616), which is a collection of papers from the session of the same name held at the SAE 2001 World Congress.  The papers included in SP-1616 cover vehicle impact conditions from the side, rear and during rollovers.  The subjects include design studies using finite element cadaver modeling, side impact thoracic injury criteria, and head interfacial pressures during pillar contact.  The papers also cover injury patterns and kinematics of occupants during side impact, rear impact, and rollover.

The principal author, Thomas A. Braun, presented the paper at the World Congress held in Detroit.
