Speed Conversion - Units

Conversion from one unit to another is a matter of factoring out equivalent basis units. For example, the basis units of speed are distance and time. Typical engineering units for distance include meters, kilometers, inches, feet, miles, etc. Typical units for time include seconds, minutes, hours, etc.

To convert from mph to feet/sec, and noting that one mile is 5,280 feet and one hour is 3600 seconds:

Example: 30 mph is precisely 44 ft/sec.

The basis units cancel; the numerical quantities simplify, leaving:

Example: If a vehicle's speed is 50 mph, it will travel approximately 75 feet in one second

(50 mph x 1.5 = 75 ft/sec.).
