Tom Boster Returns to High School

The Bexley, Ohio, Education Foundation requested Tom Boster, a member of the Bexley High School Class of 1954, to serve as the invited speaker for its yearly Dr. Judah Folkman Scientist in Residence Program.  The namesake and founder of the program, Dr. Moses Judah Folkman, graduated from Bexley High School in 1950.  Today he is known worldwide for his research involving the drugs Endostatin and Angiostatin as possible new cancer treatments.

The Dr. Judah Folkman Science Fund was established in 1999 to provide opportunities in the science field.  This is achieved each year through a series of classroom experiences that bring recognized science professionals and high school students together.

Tom Boster shared his real-life experiences from his work as a physicist/engineer during his three-day lecture series at the Folkman Scientist in Residence Program.  He pointed out that fewer than five U.S. Senators and fewer than 12 U.S. Representatives have a science background.

Dr. Boster admitted to his audience that while in school, he was more distinguished on the athletic field than in the classroom.  In his junior year of college, after two years of average college grades, it was on the football field, watching an angry teammate taking out his frustrations on a tackling sledge, that he had his epiphany.  Tom continued his football scholarship for all four years but also focused on his upper division courses, achieving (almost) straight A's and making the Dean's list during his junior and senior years.  He went on to earn a Masters and Doctorate degree from Ohio University in the physics department.

After puttering around Europe on a $25 Puch motorcycle, Boster ventured to Southern California , attracted by the surfing and scuba diving.  He went on to work for the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory and formed his own business in 1980.
